Distribution — Certification and Registration
Who may distribute SIF units: the NISM Series V-D certification required under SEBI's circular of 21 July 2026, the usual AMFI registration (ARN), what became of Series XIII, and what the framework does not require.
Two requirements
Anyone who distributes SIF units needs two things: a valid NISM Series V-D certification and the usual AMFI registration, the AMFI Registration Number (ARN). NISM is the National Institute of Securities Markets; AMFI is the Association of Mutual Funds in India.
The ARN is the same registration used for mutual fund distribution. There is no separate AMFI 'SIF Distributor' registration.
What Series V-D covers
Series V-D is required under SEBI's circular of 21 July 2026. It covers the distribution of both SIFs and mutual fund schemes, so its holder does not need a separate Series V-A certificate.
It does not cover every product. Distribution of Portfolio Management Services (PMS) needs a different certification, NISM Series XXI-A.
What became of Series XIII
NISM Series XIII was the earlier certification for distributing SIFs. It is not applicable after 21 September 2026; the required certification is now Series V-D. People who obtained Series XIII earlier remain covered until their certificate expires.
What the framework does not require
The SIF framework has no mandated 'enhanced suitability' test and no periodic AMFI reporting by distributors.
The ordinary conduct rules for mutual fund distributors continue to apply. AMFI's code asks distributors to seek information to understand an investor's needs and bars them from promising or indicating returns. A distributor distributes or sells; titles such as adviser are reserved for persons registered with SEBI as investment advisers.
What a certificate shows
A certificate shows that the seller holds the required qualification. It says nothing about how a strategy will perform, and every SIF carries a warning that investments in a SIF involve relatively higher risk including potential loss of capital, liquidity risk and market volatility.
Rules at a glance
Checking the person across the table
Joseph, 49, who owns a printing press in Kottayam, is shown a SIF strategy by a mutual fund distributor. He asks for the ARN, which he can verify on AMFI's website, and asks which NISM certificate the distributor holds. The answer is Series V-D.
That one certificate is enough for distributing both mutual fund schemes and SIF units. Had the answer been Series XIII, it would count only if obtained earlier and not yet expired. Joseph also notes what the checks do not cover: they say nothing about how the strategy will perform.
Key points
- A SIF distributor needs a valid NISM Series V-D certification and the usual AMFI registration (ARN).
- Series V-D also covers mutual fund distribution, without a separate Series V-A certificate.
- Series XIII is not applicable after 21 September 2026; earlier holders are covered until their certificate expires.
- There is no separate AMFI 'SIF Distributor' registration and no mandated 'enhanced suitability' test.
Common misunderstandings
- Series V-D is not an add-on to Series V-A: it covers mutual fund distribution as well as SIFs.
- Series XIII has not lapsed for everyone: it is not applicable after 21 September 2026, but earlier holders are covered until their certificate expires.
- A certified distributor is not an adviser: that title is reserved for SEBI-registered investment advisers.
- Series V-D does not cover PMS: that needs NISM Series XXI-A.
Questions people ask
Which AMFI registration does a SIF distributor hold?
The usual ARN, the same one used for mutual fund distribution. No separate SIF registration exists.
Does a distributor need both Series V-A and Series V-D to sell SIFs?
No. Series V-D covers both SIFs and mutual fund schemes.
Is a suitability test mandated before a SIF is sold?
The SIF framework mandates no 'enhanced suitability' test. AMFI's code, which applies to mutual fund distributors generally, asks them to seek information to understand an investor's needs.
